Pioneer Aero Ltd and the NZ War Birds tour visit  - April 2021

Art Potpourri U3A group
- Meets 3rd Tues 2.00 pm

Art Potpourri reflects the wide artistic interests of our members and the information shared is stimulating and often fascinating especially when lesser known artists like Yayoi Kusama are presented. Subjects have sometimes been inspired by overseas travel such as Aboriginal art symbols, the French Impressionists, Scottish architect Charles Rennie Macintosh, Lalique glass and Paula Moderstrom. Gallery and artist studio visits have been highlights. Family links enabled visits to acclaimed NZ artist Peata Larkin’s studio and also to see glass artist Jenny McLeod demonstrate the techniques she uses. Torbay artist Vivien Davimes was very welcoming and demonstrated her print making techniques. Art patron Sir James Wallace's magnificent property, Rannoch, has thousands of works by NZ artists and craft people and we enjoyed our guided visit very much. Master printer and graphic artist Tara McLeod outlined techniques he uses at his Silverdale Exhibition. During the lockdowns, the internet provided much stimulating information and delightful virtual tours like the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum Curators from Home series. We are keen supporters of local galleries, the city Art Gallery and keep up to date with their exhibitions.

Vivien Davimes

This Special Interest Group - Art PotpourriVivien Davimes is an artist and fine art printmaker working from her studio at Waiake, Torbay. Her art school training in the UK was in Textile Design. The majority of her work now involves printmaking, intaglio etchings usually with aquatint, linocuts, monoprints and drypoint with Chine-colle. The sea and seashore with its flora and fauna are favourite inspirations for her work. She is currently working on a series of New Zealand's beautiful beaches. Eleven members of our group visited Vivien in her studio/gallery and we were delighted when she showed us some of the process and techniques involved in etching and using her large printing press.

In June 2021  the the ART POTPOURRI GROUP had a stand at the ‘Have a go’ day in the Heart of the Bays (community rooms) Browns Bay. Denise was there to share groups aspirations and to solicit potential new U3A members.  Group meets once a month at 2.00pm on the 2nd Tuesday in the Browns Bay Community rooms.
